Ingredient Substitutions podast

Ingredient Substitutions

It can be really frustrating when you are in the middle of cooking and suddenly realize you are missing an ingredient. Luckily, with the invention of the internet, it doesn’t have to ruin your cooking experience. There are tons of substitutions out there for common, and some rare, ingredients. So today I would like to share some of my favorites. One of the ingredients I never have and never want to buy is buttermilk. I just don’t have a need for it most of the time. All you have to do is take 1 cup of milk and add a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Let the ingredients sit for 5 minutes, whisk them together and Viola! No one is the wiser.
I also always seem to run out of eggs when I need one for a recipe. Using ¼ cup of unsweetened applesauce works like a charm. This one is great for parents since they usual have applesauce somewhere in the pantry. But you can also whisk together 2 tablespoons of water with one teaspoon of vegetable oil and 2 tablespoons of baking powder.
As a 21 year old you might think I would have a full bar in my home, but I do not. So recipes that call for alcohol can be a problem. I don’t know anyone who has sherry on hand. I like to use apple juice or apple cider to sub for sherry. If you don’t have vodka you can use 1 cup of white grape juice mixed with lime juice to taste.
These are just a few of the great substitutions out there. I have some more listed on the blog as well! Cooking can be intimidating, but if you find the right resources it does not have to be hard!
